Social Subjects

Mr Rathie
Head of faculty

In Social Subjects we aim to give pupils the knowledge and skills to be able to make sense of the world around them. In History, we ask pupils to think hard about difficult questions; Were conscientious objectors cowards? How have the Vikings shaped modern Scotland? Why was the medieval world so vulnerable to the Black Death? In Geography, we examine issues such as climate change, the impact of fast fashion and the benefits and limitations of wind power. In Modern Studies, pupils investigate topics as varied as the rights of the child, the impact of the media on our decisions and why there is tension between Iran and the rest of the world. In RMPS, we travel across the world to look at sacred wonders in Mali, Bali and Japan. We also confront difficult issues, including capital punishment and euthanasia.
