Foyer display

This display in the school foyer was put together by Clerical Assistant Mrs Moira Horne who is very shortly retiring after a total of 18 years at Thurso High School. The discovery of the cup and dux medals in an old safe in the Head teacher’s office lead to research which revealed the history of both items. The Swanson Golf Club Cup was brought north by the first Rector of the school, Mr Donald Grant, himself a native of Caithness and member of the Edinburgh Caithness Association. Formed in 1837 the Association launched schemes for the foundation of prizes and bursaries in an effort to stimulate learning in the youth of Caithness and the Golf Club to promote the game and friendship amongst people from the same County. The dux medals are dated 1840 and the first recipient of the Golf Cup was J Gunn in 1908.

Seen in the display also, is the original school blazer worn by pupils when the school first opened in 1958.
